Wishard is a center of medical education and research.
Indiana, like many other states, suffers from a critical shortage of physicians and nurses. Wishard's role in stemming this shortage is vital. As a teaching hospital, our proximity to partners, including the Indiana University School of Medicine, the IU School of Nursing, the IU School of Dentistry, the IU School of Rehabilitative Services, the Regenstrief Institute and the Purdue University School of Pharmacy, is important not only to students and physician faculty, but for long-term viability of Indiana health care.
Wishard provides hands-on experience that benefits both patients and providers-in-training. More than 99 percent of our physicians are members of the IU School of Medicine faculty. Under their guidance, tomorrow's care providers learn specialized surgeries, life-saving care and complex treatments in a real-world environment. At Wishard, medical knowledge continuously evolves and new treatments are applied through our premier trauma and burn centers, which always stand ready. Wishard is a leading training ground for new physicians and other health professionals.
Wishard is consistently on the leading edge of health care research. Among the hundreds of clinical trials currently underway, Wishard has partnered with the IU School of Medicine in a study testing PolyHeme, a solution of chemically modified human hemoglobin in trauma patients who are suffering from massive blood loss. As one of only two adult Level I Trauma Centers in the state, this research is critical to our community's urgent care capabilities.
